Learn to Cook Tom Kha/Tom Yum at February’s Asian Mint Cooking Class

One of the many ways I share my culture and feed souls is through my cooking classes. I’m happy to announce that my team and I have already set the 2020 schedule for the monthly Asian Mint cooking class. The next class is going to be on February 8, 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Asian Mint Inwood Village. Will I see you there? I certainly hope so. You can get your tickets here.

For the February class, I’ll be teaching how to cook tom kha and tom yum, which are both classic Thai comfort food. They’re both hot soups, and they’re just perfect for cold weather.

Tom kha and tom yum are classic Thai comfort food

Tom kha is also known as Thai coconut soup. As its name indicates, this soup uses coconut milk for its base. Essential seasonings for tom kha include galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, Thai chili, lime juice, and fish sauce. These seasonings give tom kha sour and spicy flavors.

Like tom kha, tom yum also uses galangal, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, lime juice, Thai chili, and fish sauce. However, instead of coconut milk, its base is a spicy paste made up of garlic, shallots, and roasted chilis. It’s common to find shrimp in tom yum, but there are versions cooked with pork, chicken, or beef instead.

My Asian Mint cooking class isn’t just an event where you get to learn step by step how to make specific Thai dishes. It’s also an opportunity for you to discover Thai culture and the role that food plays in it. These classes are hands-on and highly interactive.

They’re also family-friendly. So, if you want some bonding time with your kids, bring them with you to my cooking class. We welcome little ones eight years old and up. As I told CraveDFW: “When you get young ones to experience a new cuisine by sight, feel, and taste, and then create a dish out of new flavors and ingredients, they fall in love with cooking and start to explore more of what the world has to offer.”
